G. Darrell Hulsey has built a career of more than 35 years in the healthcare management industry, serving as both an entrepreneur and an executive leader. Since 2016, he has served as the Chief Executive Officer of Professional Billing, Inc. (PBI). This company offers revenue cycle management and practice management services to physician practices in over 15 states. In this role, he oversees a network of over 200 practices. Alongside his business responsibilities, he has been devoted to philanthropy for more than three decades, supporting charities and community organizations through both financial contributions and volunteer work.
An Accomplished Career
Darrell Hulsey began his professional career in 1991 as a Senior Operations Manager with a physician services company in Knoxville, Tennessee. In this position, he was responsible for managing hospital-based physician practices in four states, negotiating managed care contracts with third-party payors, and developing new business opportunities in several regions. These experiences gave him a strong foundation in healthcare operations and prepared him for future leadership roles.
After three years, he co-founded Medical Management Professionals (MMP) with six other partners. Over his years with the company, he served in multiple leadership positions and played a central role in its growth. In 1998, the organization was acquired by a public corporation, where he went on to become Vice President and later President and Chief Executive Officer. When the company returned to private ownership in 2013, he remained in leadership until taking on the role of CEO at PBI in 2016.
During his time with MMP, the organization managed more than 34 million procedures, processed $5 billion in client charges, and collected more than $2 billion in revenues. These results contributed to $165 million in top-line revenue and $21 million in earnings, as reported in the financial statements.
Notable Achievements with MMP
As an Owner, Partner, and Executive Vice President, he directed the launch of new business operations across different states and specialties. Darrell was closely involved in areas such as operations, sales and marketing, IT, HR, compliance, accounting, finance, acquisitions, governance, and geographic expansion. His leadership guided the company into new specialties and markets, laying the groundwork for long-term success.
From 2007 to 2013, while serving as President and CEO, he increased the company's revenue from approximately $90 million to $165 million. He oversaw every significant aspect of the business, including operations, financial performance, accounting, sales, acquisitions, compliance, HR, IT, and marketing. He also recruited and managed the Executive Team, all of whom reported directly to him.
During his tenure, he collaborated with the COO, CTO, and operations teams to consolidate 12 different practice management and billing systems into four. This project took three to four years to complete, reduced the workforce by approximately 35%, and cut overall operating costs by more than 45%.
Earlier, while serving as Executive Vice President of Operations for the East Region, he supervised physician practices ranging from groups of four to more than 100 providers. These included specialties such as radiology, anesthesiology, pathology, and emergency medicine. Under his leadership, revenues in the East Region increased by 83% and profits grew by 98% over a five-year period. Hulsey also helped generate over $30 million in new company revenues. In less than two years, he expanded operations in the region from two states to 10, while consistently delivering pre-tax profit margins of 25% to 30%.
In addition, he spent four years as Chief Compliance Officer, where he created and developed the organization’s third-party compliance program.
CEO of Professional Billing, Inc.
In 2016, he took on the role of Chief Executive Officer at PBI. Under his leadership, the company achieved topline revenue growth of 250% between 2016 and 2025. This growth was driven by expansion efforts, operational efficiency, and customized services designed for physician practices. He also managed the acquisition and integration of five organizations, each achieving cost synergies of about 30% within 18 months.
His leadership responsibilities at PBI include overseeing finance, accounting, sales, compliance, HR, and marketing. Darrell introduced advanced data analytics systems to improve revenue cycle processes, resulting in a 25% reduction in claim denials and a 15% increase in collections year after year. He also led digital transformation initiatives, implementing AI-driven billing solutions and cloud-based practice management platforms. These efforts reduced administrative overhead by 40% and improved client satisfaction across the organization.
He also established compliance frameworks that aligned with HIPAA and CMS regulations, resulting in strong audit results and reduced risk across all operations.
